Is it normal to lose more hair in the fall?
You are in the shower doing your hair washing routine and all at once you notice WAY more hair in your hands than normal. What could it be? Are you going crazy? Is something terribly wrong with you that means your losing all your hair? I have so many clients that experience hair loss at so many times of the year and I have many questions I ask to determine if it is seasonal hair loss or something more serious.
First I do not want to you to have to ready all the way to the end of answer your burning question. YES hair can shed faster in the fall. But why you may ask? There was a 6 year study that concluded in 2009 that women do experience more shedding in the fall. We have to look back to the spring to understand why. I often hear so many clients say that their hair grows faster in the spring. So based on this study it could be our hair is actually getting thicker not necessarily growing faster. According to this Swedish study one suggestion is we retain more hair in the spring and summer which is concluded to help protect our hair in the summer from the suns UV rays. Once we have reached the next season that hair is no longer needed for protection and sheds. This is repeated yearly and is normal.
Another possibly additional stress that we face in the summer could be an impact as well. As a momma I can attest to summers being a challenge of schedules being abnormal and a little crazy. I am writing this blog post in the current COVID-19 crisis and this summer was exceptionally stressful so this is information is even more profound. This shedding can occur in October and November. So if you are experiencing unusual amounts of hair loss this could be the reason.
Keep in mind that some other causes of hair loss are stress, illness, surgery, hormonal changes, buildup on the scalp and other medical conditions. If this is more than seasonal hair loss you should consult with your doctor and consult with a hair loss specialist.
