Is Your Hair Dryer Killing Your Hair?

I am sure if you have spend even a moment with a hairstylist they will say time and time again that you need a thermal protectant for that flat iron you use. And of course you do! That is another conversation for another day. But do you know that you could be cause damage before you even heat up that flat iron or curling iron?

A blow dryer is my favorite tool of all because it can be a magician on hair and create amazing volume or smooth even the frizzy and curliest hair. BUT as with any tool you need to know the rules before using it

  • This is the most important investment in your at home arsenal so spend a good $ on a quality machine

  • Use the concentrator!!!!! Do you see those metal pieces at the front of your dryer? They are a killer hot hair shredding ninja. This is often the main reason I see breakage in so many parts of my clients hair and when I run down the rabbit hole of all the reasons for breakage this is number 1 that comes up with a “Oh I need to use that”? YES you do!!!

  • Use a lower heat setting.

  • Are you a curly girl? That diffuser is your BFF how ever you hair drys is how it will stay. If you hate that flat hair on the top of your head just a few minutes before heading out the door will make all the difference.

  • Do you have baby fine hair? A volumizing product and your hairdryer will make that hair from dowdy to fab! My favorite go to product is Zenagen Volumizing Foam

  • Do you have frizzy corse hair? Than you need to pair your hairdryer with Kevin.Murphy’s Smooth.Again Treatment.

  • How you hold your dyer next to that round brush can make your hair a frizzy mess or smoother than a baby kittens tummy! Make sure that nozzle is pointing down and polishing your hair cuticle.

The other question I hear often is what is a good hair dryer. I feel that your hairdryer is your best investment and should be the most expensive tool in your bathroom. A good hair dryer will retail for between $120 and $300. The more you are spending on a quality machine the faster your hair will dry with less damage.

Below is the list of my favorite brands

  • BaBylissPro

  • Dyson

  • GHD
