Spring break is now behind us and we are all thinking now of the summer. More and more of us are now vaccinated and ready to do SOMETHING!

Those endless days at the pool or beachside are only weeks away and that heat and humidity can be detrimental to the health of our hair. That amazing and wonderful sun we have been waiting to see has a dark side are well and can easily dry out out hair, which leads to breakage and frizz.

So here is a list of things to make sure you are ready for as our temps start to heat up and that humidity starts to try to rival Florida here in North Carolina.

Pool & Ocean’s effects and how to prevent damage

Both the pool and the beach pose possible damage to our hair. Salt water draws out the natural hydration in our hair, while chlorine strips the hair of its natural protective oils. Prep your hair before and after taking a plunge to protect from chlorine and salt water damage.

Pro tip: Use Kevin.Murphy’s Shimmer.Shine while out in the sun for SPF coverage for your locks. Before heading into the pool fully wet your hair with fresh water. After the day at the pool or beach is complete wash your hair with Kevin.Murphy’s Maxi.Wash and finish with Kevin.Murphy’s Hydrate.Me.Mask or deep conditioner of choice.

Protect your color

Do you often wonder where your toner flys off to or why it fades so fast? Frequent sun exposure can be one of the major culprits. Want to know the easiest way to combat that big ball of sun in the sky? Grab that big floppy sun hat, scarf or anything to cover your hair and scalp. And for extra sun protection use

Scarfs also act as protection from wind damage. They keep your hair in control while the wind is flying around you at the beautiful trip to the beach or if you are chasing your toddler around the park. They are also great at reducing tangles that you are liable to start pulling through later in the day, resulting in further damage and breakage.

Skip the blow dryer and irons

Enjoy the warm air and quicker drying naturally and let the sun do its job to dry your hair. Embrace your natural curls and texture. And if you are going to use heat make sure to protect that hair with a thermal protectant like Kevin.Murphy’s Headed.Defence.

Trim those ends

I can not preach enough how important regular trims are to the health of your hair. The extreme heat and extra outdoor activities can put more strain on your ends. So keep those trims at leave every 6-12 weeks.

Keep your hair hydrated

Summer hair ailments like dryness and split-ends can be reduced with the regular use of of a deep conditioning treatment in your hair care regimen. Cleanse, protect and moisturize your hair with Kevin.Murphy’s Re.Store or Hydrate.Me.Masque. Keep those ends quenched with a bi-monthly or weekly treatment for more frequent washers.

Travel size products

Do not expect the hotel and VRBO’s to have your favorite hair care products. And often they are not high quality salon products either. Are you wanting to take your favorite styling products and don’t want to take those big bottles. Order your travel size bottles of your favorite products from my studio and you will be ready just shoot me an email with your request about a week before you head out and I can add it to my weekly order. And don’t throw them away. I do not stock the travel size because I want to ensure you are not wasting plastic. I do keep the travel size hair sprays as they are not refillable. You can also find perfect travel size bottles on amazon that are refillable as well and reduce your foot print of plastic in the trash.

I hope these summer tips keep those locks of your healthy and happy all summer long.
