Fine hair and conditioner

I hear so often clients and guests with fine hair skipping conditioner for fear of losing volume. But conditioner is so important to ensure healthy hair and scalp for those with dry scalp. Why is it important and how do you prevent flat hair? Read on …..

Conditioner is a key part of your cleansing process. When we shampoo our hair and scalp we are removing natural oils and product buildup from the hair. And even the most gentle and professional shampoos are not made to impart oils back into the hair. Unless it is a cleansing (no poo) shampoo/conditioner. So it is important after removing our natural oils to replenish them. The more often you shampoo, and you fine hair girls are usually frequent washers, the more imperative it is you use conditioners, leave-in conditioners and masques. When used properly conditioners should not weigh your hair down and they ensure your hair is shiny and strong. But it does more than just give shine, here are some ways conditioner makes your hair better.

Static prevention (aka dry hair)

Do you struggle with static especially in the winter? That is a sign your hair is dry and needs hydration. Staticky hair happens when your hair builds up an electrical charge. If you need a refresher on the science, I’ve got you covered! Static electricity is created when two unlike objects rub against each other, causing electrons from one object to be transferred to the other. The object that loses the electrons gets a positive charge, while the object that gains electrons get a negative charge.

An easy example is when you take off your hat. When the material of your hat rubs against the strands of your hair, they swap electrons. This swap causes a kind of electric charge to build up on your hair. If there is humidity in the air, the charge can usually just go away. However, if there isn’t any humidity in the air or moisture in your hair, like on a dry winter morning, the charge causes your strands to repel from another like a magnet. Just like when you held that cool ball of light at the science museum as a kid. Electric charges don't flow through water, so the lack of humidity typically found in winter months makes hair static more prominent. This also explains why dry and damaged hair is more prone to hair static.

In short, your hair static happens because your hair is literally so full of electrons that it can’t stand itself. Now you know and of course we have already spoke to how to help….conditioner!

Breakage

Our hair the moment it starts to be visible from the scalp is no longer a living organism and in fact dead. And we are working to ensure that hair strand stays soft and pliable. When you are not using a conditioner on your ends the hair is like a dry stick. It can break and shatter at the ends. Then that hair that has split can travel up the hair strand even further up and split into multiple tiny strands that create massive tangles. So conditioner is super important to ensure the hydration of your hair.

Limp hair

You may think limp hair is caused by conditioner. And on one hand, yes it can. But that is if you are using the wrong conditioner. And if you are applying the conditioner to the scalp. For most people with normal to oily scalps it is suggested to only shampoo the scalp and condition the mid part of your hair and ends. If you are using non-professional shampoos and conditioners they can absolutely build up on the hair and weigh it down. However, a professional volumizing conditioner will in fact be super light and keep your hair pliable so it is better at holding a style.

So now you know conditioner is important to the health of your hair. How do you keep your fine hair from being flat and lifeless. Every persons needs for conditioners is different on the chemical services received, frequency of washing and scalp conditions. But these are my favorite products to recommend to my clients Angel.Rinse from Kevin.Murphy, Goldie Locks Leave-in conditioner and serum. All 3 products are moisture packed and weightless.
